Although Shildon wasn’t on the main line, there were often rail works on that line on Sundays, and the trains were diverted through Shildon to the delight of all us youngsters. The combination of steam and smoke as it enveloped us was exhilarating. Apart from diversions there was always a powerful engine pulling the Mail Train every night at 6.10pm
